Grey rat / plain, channel rat /
His body reaches 18-25cm, and the tail is shorter than the body. Coloration is dark gray-brown range, and the belly is lighter. Prefers moist habitats / shafts, basements / - an excellent swimmer and climber, has the remarkable ability to dig holes and moves. Lives in colonies, and multiplies rapidly. Highly aggressive.
Black Rat / roof rat, ship rat /
Smaller, the tail is longer than the body. Skillful and fast climber, swimmer and jumper, prefers suburban areas, and parts of the houses. It eats mostly fruit, cereals and nuts.
Both rodent species are hosts for some species of ticks, they carry rickettsiae and parasitic diseases.
Treatment against rats:
There are 2 types - preventive and exterminating.
- Preventive Pest control is essential and involves creating mechanical entry barriers to stop the entry and settlement of rodents - deprivation of food and shelter. It`s performed in combination with high hygiene, regular garbage collection, blocking holes and other openings.
- Exterminating Pest control is done by using toxic food baits in the form of tablets, rodenticide blocks, pellets, powder, etc.. A very important condition is to determine the exact concentration of rodenticides and attractive food bait.
Biological control: Various mechanical– catching and killing traps. Catching traps are often used in areas with single specimens. Killing traps are applied in areas where it`s prohibited the use of rodenticides, and when there is a risk of disease.
- Chemical method the most applicable. Rodenticide preparations such as the effect can be different - fast and slow acting rodenticides. In slow-acting, there is a need for longer treatment, repeated consumption required for lethal effects. The rodents die hidden in their shelter. For fast-acting rodenticide effect the death is a sudden, the animals die in the open. Rodents are social animals and it is important that death does not occur immediately after eating poison or visible as it is a clear sign for the others not to eat the poison. Slow-acting rodenticides accumulate in the body and cannot make a direct connection to the death of individuals with food, so they are more applicable.
It can be done with a special powder. Contact preparation works and stick to the fur and paws.
